The Montreal Canadiens spoiled the Jets first franchise game in Winnipeg. Michael Cammalleri got the Habs off to a fast start and the Canadiens didn’t look back; pounding the Jets 5-1. Goals for the Canadiens came from Cammalleri, Plekanec, Weber, Moen and Pacioretty. Plekanec added two assists for three points on the night. Carey Price stopped 30 of 31 for the win while Pavelec only managed 17 saves on 22 shots for the loss. The Habs return to action on Thursday for the home opener against the Calgary Flames.

Markstrom made 40 saves and Scottie Upshall scored 5:02 into the third period to help the Florida Panthers extend Montreal’s losing streak to six with a 2-1 win over the Canadiens on Monday night. The 21-year-old Swede made his second career start and recorded his second straight win, including an 18-save relief outing in a 4-2 win over the New York Islanders on Saturday. “For a young guy, it’s tough to come into a building like this to start after your first win,” Upshall said. “He played unreal in the third period last game for us and to follow it up tonight with save after save, especially late in the game, too. This crowd can be very intimidating but he definitely held himself very well and he was a big part of our victory tonight.” “He’s like a Transformer,” Scottie Upshall said of the rookie Markstrom, who backs up starter Jose Theodore. “We’re not sure if he’s human or if he’s part alien.”
